White Aveiro

ELP

On Avenida Dr. Lourenço Peixinho, a structural and identity axis of Aveiro, the White Aveiro building is born from a reflection on the city’s continuity, respect for what exists, and the need to design the future through a contemporary and responsible architectural language.

The proposal begins from a delicate condition: the presence of a pre-existing structure in a state of decay, located between two larger buildings, where the relationship with the prevailing heights and alignments became inevitable. The response was not one of imposition, but of integration. The new built volume does not seek to stand out, but rather to extend the urban rhythm of the avenue, restoring its harmony and clarity.
The façade is organized into a modular grid that, through repetition, ensures coherence and abstraction. All elements have been reduced to a minimal, white, and refined language, where the depth of the openings and the play of light and shadow create rhythm and texture, restoring to the block a discreet yet expressive balance.

On the ground floor, beyond maintaining the commercial continuity of the avenue, the building preserves the pedestrian passage connecting Avenida Dr. Lourenço Peixinho to the canal — an identifying feature of this street that here is reinforced as a gesture of urban continuity. This corridor becomes a space of permeability and fluidity, connecting front and rear, extending the pedestrian experience to the riverbank and enhancing the building’s public character.
If the urban frontage is built through continuity, the heart of the building lies in the void: a central courtyard that ensures healthy conditions, ventilation, and natural light for all apartments. This negative space becomes a catalyst for life, allowing each dwelling to open itself to air and light, countering the typical density of this type of program. It is there that the building breathes, offering quality of life and environmental sustainability.

The modular construction strategy responds not only to formal coherence but also to a logic of rationalization and prefabrication, promoting greater constructive efficiency and durability. The use of a single color reinforces the idea of abstraction and timelessness, allowing the building to dialogue with its neighbors without resorting to ornament or unnecessary gestures.

The housing program develops through flexible studio typologies (T0s), designed to meet the city’s current needs but also reversible in the future: the modules allow the fusion of units, creating larger apartments that follow the evolution of urban life and the transformations of living patterns.
